World Meteorological Day
My late brother-in-law Otuto, a ship engineer, said he had spent years learning how to read weather. Not from screens. From the sea.
He could look at the colour of the horizon at dawn and know what the afternoon would bring. He could smell rain before it reached the Indian Ocean. His joints felt pressure shifts before the barometer moved.
Later he told me something I have never forgotten. "Modern instruments show you what is happening now. Forty years of watching the sea tells you what is coming."
Jesus said this to the Pharisees, who were asking him for a sign from heaven. They were excellent readers of physical weather. They could not read what God was doing in front of them.
The problem was not intelligence. The problem was that they had trained their attention on the wrong horizon.
We all have patterns in our lives that have been trying to communicate something for years. The recurring conflict. The repeating loss. The theme that surfaces in every season regardless of the circumstances.
