Feast of the Annunciation · International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery
We tend to romanticise her. We paint halos around her head. We imagine her older. More composed. More certain.
But she was probably fourteen. Maybe fifteen. A girl from Nazareth.
When the angel appeared, Mary was not serene. The Gospel of Luke says she was greatly troubled. She questioned. She tried to understand. "How will this be?"
Only after the explanation did she answer. Then she says the words that reshape the future. "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word." History often turns on moments that do not look calm. Not calm. Courage.
Mary's yes is the most consequential yes in human history. And it came at enormous cost. She would face whispers. Joseph would nearly leave her. She would raise a son she could not fully understand. She would stand at his cross.
She said yes without knowing all of that. She only knew two things: God had spoken. And she was willing.
What costly yes has God been asking for that you have been waiting to understand fully before committing to?
