Anniversary of the assassination of Óscar Romero (1980)
When Óscar Romero became archbishop of San Salvador, the government believed they had chosen wisely. He was cautious. Scholarly. Not known for confrontation. He was expected to keep the peace.
Three weeks later his friend Rutilio Grande was assassinated. A priest killed for working with the poor. At the funeral Romero said: "When a man is killed, the image of God is killed." From that moment his voice changed.
On March 24, 1980, a sniper shot him while he stood at the altar. He had been chosen because he was manageable. Until he wasn't.
Romero's transformation was not a personality change. What changed was what he was willing to see — and once you have seen something clearly, the choice of whether to speak about it is no longer a preference. It becomes a question of who you are.
He knew he would be killed. He said so explicitly in his final interview, given three days before he was shot.
