The Question He Asked Three Times

Peter had denied Jesus three times. Three sentences spoken into the cold night. "I do not know him." After the resurrection, Jesus took Peter aside and asked: "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Three times. Once for each denial.

Forgiveness could have been announced in a single sentence. But grace came as a question. The question did not erase the memory of failure. He walked Peter back through it. Each question opened the wound again — but this time it was answered with love instead of fear.

Joe Asiba

The grief Peter felt at the third question is one of the most humanly real moments in all of Scripture. He knew why it was the third time. He felt the weight of the correspondence.

And then came the commissioning. Three questions of love. Three answers. Three commands: "Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep." Jesus did not restore Peter privately and then send him to the margins. He restored him specifically and gave him back his calling with even greater clarity.

Is there a failure in your past that you have accepted forgiveness for in principle, but not experienced restoration from in practice?

Scripture: John 21:17

✙ Prayer for the Day ✙

Lord who asked three times, You don't let me off with a general pardon. You restore specifically, surgically, with the same precision as the wound. Ask me again: Do you love me? Let me answer. And then — give me back my calling. In Your Name.
