World Down Syndrome Day (UN) · International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The Forest and the Child

I once heard a saying attributed to Kenya.

I have never been able to verify its source.

But the line stays with me.

It is difficult to forget.

“A child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.”

It is easy to hear that sentence as a threat.

But I have come to hear it differently.

As a diagnosis.

Every act of destruction I have witnessed — in families, in organisations, in communities — seems to carry the same root.

Most destruction begins somewhere quieter.

A door that never opened.

A voice that was never heard.

A person who needed belonging and found none — by silence, by neglect, or by structure —they were told that they did not belong.

And the unmet need for warmth found another form.

A village that refuses to embrace its children eventually feels the heat of that refusal.

Joe Asiba

The forest does not exist for any single species. It is a community of interdependence so complex that scientists are still discovering new relationships within it. Trees share resources through root networks. Some species can only germinate in the shade created by others. What looks like competition is often cooperation in disguise.

Human communities work the same way — or should.

The child with Down syndrome who is seen and celebrated is not a charity case. They are a teacher, a gift, a bearer of something the community cannot supply for itself. The person from a different race or tribe who is welcomed is not a concession. They are a completion.

Christ welcomed you — not after you cleaned up, not after you demonstrated value, not after you proved you belonged. Before all of that. Welcome one another the same way.

Scripture: Romans 15:7

✙ Prayer for the Day ✙

God who made the forest and every child in it, I confess I have sorted people by usefulness. I have drawn my circle of welcome tightly. Forgive me for the fires I have contributed to by the warmth I withheld. Make my welcome as wide as Yours. In Your Name.
