Yom HaShoah — Holocaust Remembrance Day
In Jerusalem there is a hall called the Hall of Names. It holds the Pages of Testimony — handwritten records gathered from survivors and descendants over decades. Each page tries to rescue a life from disappearance. A name. A birthplace. A fragment of a story.
Six million people were murdered. The memorial is called Yad Vashem — "a place and a name." The words come from Isaiah: "I will give them a place and a name better than sons and daughters." Because when a name is spoken, a life refuses to disappear entirely.
To remember is a moral act. The Shoah did not succeed because of the killers alone. It succeeded because of the bystanders — the millions who looked away, who found reasons not to know.
God gives names that shall not be cut off — to those the world tried to erase. To the enslaved. To the unnamed woman of Luke 7. To the boy with the seizures. To the six million. To you.
Memory is not nostalgia. It is resistance. Who have you been looking away from?
